-Technologie-IT

-Gestion

5 Things You Should Stop Doing – Express Shipping

I read an article on lifebuzz.com about things you should stop doing to yourself.

It got me thinking about express.  So here is a short list of things you should stop doing…with your small packages and envelopes.

Stop shipping in the past:

There are tools out there that can help you manager your day to day shipping.

Stop ignoring your express spend:

It adds up quickly.  Make sure you are maximizing your savings.  Rate shopping is a great tool to help you determine the best shipping method and price.

Stop giving up control:

There are times when you need your package to arrive the next business day or maybe it’s not a rush and you can wait.  The problem is that you may not have access with discounts to certain levels of service.  You’re stuck shipping the way the carrier wants you to ship.  Take back your control.  A multi-carrier solution gives you access to multiple levels of service and pricing.

Stop paying for additional charges:

Certain charges are a must – change of address, dangerous goods, oversized etc.  Stop paying to keep your account opened…yes, that’s an actual thing.  Stop paying for extra pcs.  Stop paying on a tier system…what you shipped last month should not influence this month’s pricing.  Your entire shipping volume should determine that.  A tier system is the bane of my existence.

Stop thinking that you don’t deserve service:

Express shippers (small packages and envelopes) deserve service as well…and I don’t mean the automated kind.  Your package can be just as import than the full load or 40ft container coming in from overseas.  We know that and we strive to make your experience with Trinet a great one.

FOCUS ON YOUR CORE

A couple of months ago I gave up coaching football, I had been coaching for over 13 years.

Back when I started coaching I had it all figured out. Days for Trinet, 3 nights a week for football. As Trinet grew and I went from coaching 6 year olds who just enjoyed putting on the helmet to 14-15 year aspiring to make it to college ball- Trinet now needed me nights and weekends and football required attention during the day and weekends with scouting, film, recruiting etc….It was not that I was no longer qualified, it was that everything I had was not enough anymore.

Letting go of something that you have put in so much time and resources, made sacrifices and that has become almost part of who you are is not an easy thing to do. I now have a better understanding of why sometimes it is so hard for companies to outsource some of their core activities, it’s like you are giving up on what you have work so hard for. But I can say now that Trinet is a better company today because I have more time to focus…really focus on the always growing world of logistics that is changing every time we blink, our customers have already benefited from this new focus and the football team, they are already reaping the rewards.

My very good friend Terry interviewed and was appointed the new head coach. Knowing Terry and the energy he brings every day gave me confidence that the team would be well taken care of.

To stop doing what you enjoy doing is very hard, but in the hands of someone who can put the time needed to always be competing, performing at the highest level and focusing on the success 100% of the time, is always the right decision.

After all the long hours and giving it my 100% (or the 100% I was able to give) Terry, in just a few months, has brought in some great coaches, started a tutor program for the players needing help in school, given presentations at most of the local schools and rumor has it he wants to paint my old office (which is in desperate need of a few new coats)- and the 1st game is only in August. This is what the Lions, the organization and the players require and deserve. Over at Trinet, in the last couple months we have focus on our express and have seen great success, I have put together a marketing team and an events planning group. We are focused on technology and how it can help our customers supply chain. Our international group will be heading to Hong Kong to solidify our relationships with our worldwide partners and the first of many BBQ Fridays has been slotted into the schedule. This is what Trinet, the employees and our customers require and deserve.

You see by focusing on my core activity- Trinet, we were able to move in leaps and bounds and by handing over other activities (the Lions) to someone who will put in the required time and resources creates only one possible outcome- A win-win scenario- Now who can argue with that.

Good luck this year Coach Terry- Continue the proud North Shore tradition.

Outsourcing Your Logistics

We’ve recently worked with a local manufacturer in the essential services industry to reduce logistics costs in order to increase their marketing spend to help grow their international sales. banner-outsourcing

Our client was growing so quickly within North America that they hardly had enough time to manufacture and ship let alone analyze their supply chain spending.

We worked with Marketing, Finance and Operations at the executive level to find a way to help save them money…and we had 30 days to put something together for them.

After mapping their processes we realized that each department was managing their own shipping and there was no communication between the different departments.

Step 1: Centralize their logistics with Operations taking the lead.  Reduce the supplier base to increase their leverage with the carriers we chose to work with in order to lower their costs.

Step 2: Manage their tradeshows.  By using our worldwide agents we were able to reduce their shipping spend for tradeshows by 50%.  This also enabled the marketing department to focus on selling rather than clearing customs.  Our specialists were available 24/7 to answer any questions and ensure on time delivery of their booths and marketing products.

Step 3: Provide a worldwide service for express shipments.  With sales agents and technicians around the world needing equipment, demos, contracts and catalogues, we provided each rep and tech with an account number, letter of authorization and instructions on how to ship their products (including all forms and authorizations they may need) as well as a list of carrier drop off locations across North America (specifically for the techs).

We renegotiated rates with a new carrier with the ability to ship worldwide focusing all volume on one level of service to ensure highest discount level for the service they needed.

Finally, we provided all of their suppliers with the account number of the new discounted rates to ensure they paid “their” rate for all shipments and not a marked up rate from the supplier.

In the end, we saved our client over $150,000.00 in logistics costs.  The money saved was used by the marketing department to attend more tradeshows and to work with agents in territories where they did not have local representation.

International sales increased by almost $10,000,000.00 in a 12 month period leading to a new product launch and an increase to staff of almost 15% over 2 years.

Although this result may not be typical, what we can promise you is that we’ll provide you with the options that best fit your specific needs.  Maybe it’s as simple as providing a discount or as complicated as offering warehousing and a complete outsourcing option.

Contact us today to find out why our clients hire us rather than somebody else when it comes to outsourcing their logistics.

International freight forwarding – Is it for you?

newspaper routeIt’s a hot and muggy Sunday afternoon, I am sitting outside with my 16 year old nephew conversing about all the opportunities he has and what he would like to be later on. He mentions teaching, martial arts and how he would rather poke both his eyes out than be a programmer.  I start to think about what I wanted to be when I was young and never did I say International freight forwarder- if it even existed, who knows?

But as I look back I can see how each one of my experiences got me to where I am today.

My newspaper route: Now you need to understand that I lived in the country before it was even considered country, there where cows but no farms, it was out there. So a paper route of 20 customers was at least 10 miles ( in the day)Lesson 1: There was a reason a 10 year old was doing this job- nobody else wanted it.

My first company; at 15 I started my own company with a friend in the lawn care business (basically cutting grass) so we sent out flyers offering a “summer free of work” Now I still lived in the same town but guess what –everyone had like three acres of property- That’s a lot of grass my friends- we were going to be rich and in great shape. We had it made. But some people wanted hedges cut and fences painted, not exactly our specialties- our great plan turned into us spending hours cutting 10 foot hedges with manual bush cutter. Lesson 2: Stick to what you know.

My first real job was a dishwasher at a local restaurant- there I learnt to touch everything once because it was a constant flow of dishes. As the dishes where being cleaned I would jump over to the pots section and work on that pile- every second of my time was calculated so that I would finish before the night cleaning crew started. Lesson 3: be efficient and stop talking to the cute waitresses, they only slow you down.

There was never any thought of going into freight forwarding. But looking back I guess that all my experiences in life made me the perfect person for the world of international freight and transport because every day is a new challenge and distractions happen but we cannot lose our focus. People offer us all sorts of jobs that just don`t fit into what we can do- so we let them know our strengths . Time is money, if it’s on time nobody loses any money.

So if you ever dreamed of being a rock and roll singer,  would rather wash the dishes after supper because you always finished before the person drying, worked crazy hours at a lemonade stand on a road seldom travelled ,hated losing more than loved winning and have always wanted to see the world- Then I would like to meet you and discuss your future in this crazy, ever changing world of Freight forwarding (or as my mom puts it- moving things)

Sleep tight Mady, don`t let the bugsies bite.

It’s all in the way you hear it

I learnt a very valuable lesson in communication that I would like to share with you today.

A few years back a good friend of mine who coaches football was talking to his players (ages 6 and7) about a tournament coming up over the weekend.  As he was talking about the details he mentioned that there would be a bus waiting to pick them up at the park on Saturday morning – this is what followed…

Coach- “Saturday morning  be here at 7:45am, the bus will be leaving at 8am.”

Little Billy- “Should I bring my own sleeping bag?”

Coach- “Why would you need a sleeping bag?”

Little Billy- “to sleep in- aren’t we all going camping with the bus?”

Little Evan- “I have a tent, my mom says it can sleep 6, I love camping.”

Little Johnny- “Can I share with Evan he is my best friend- does my little sister have to come?”

Little Billy- “I don’t have a sister but can my mom come to tuck me in? Are you…”

Coach- “Guys nobody is going camping.”

Little Joey- “So the trip is cancelled ( a few tears)?”

Little Evan- “But you said we will be taking a bus- why did you cancel it? (more tears)”

At this point the whole team is starting to tear up…and Coach needed to act.

Coach- “Ok, ok, ok… I was just kidding, camping is still on. No need to bring any camping gear, just your football equipment- we will survive as a team. Your mom and sisters are all welcomed to come but because they do not have any football equipment they can only watch us camp.

We will bring some footballs just in case we meet up with other campers that are dressed in different colors- we need to be prepared for anything. So who is up for some camping!!”

The whole team – “We are coach!!!”

They went on to win the tournament and not one tent was pitched.

And that was the beginning of Trinet’s first rule of communication.  When things happen out of the norm (this is transport..) communicate clearly so even a 7 year olds can understand.

As a freight forwarder why I hate the term RE-SELLER

How would I describe a “RE-SELLER”?  I’m glad you asked.  A re-seller to me is selling a price and not a service.

As a “non-asset based logistics provider” or freight forwarder our goal among other things is to fill someone else’s trucks, planes, containers etc.  Like a re-seller would.

But what separates Trinet Transportation from a typical re-seller?

re-sellerEarlier today I received a call from a Montreal based courier re-seller.  This re-seller was cold calling companies located in Montreal.  He had no idea who we were or what we did, all he asked was if I was interested in saving money on my next FedEx bill.

He had no idea that we’re freight forwarders, didn’t ask what type of shipping we did or even if I shipped envelopes or small packages.  All he was doing was selling a price.  He wasn’t offering his services or business solutions…just a discount.  I’m sure he’ll get his fair share of customers.  The question is, how long will they stay?

Don’t get me wrong, I think price is important and the shipper should pay the lowest rate they can…but not at the expense of service/support/solutions.

In the end, you need the envelope, box, skid, container to arrive at the destination in the required time with as few issues as possible and at a fair rate.  Re-sellers will not provide the support you may need because they weren’t built to work that way.  They were built to add as many customers as possible…always selling a price.

At Trinet Transportation, our value is in the business solutions we offer to every client we have.  We’re more than just an account holder selling ourselves at the lowest rate.  We’re solution providers trying to make your day a little easier.  We have specialists in every division to help move your shipment.  Customer experience is extremely important to us.

If you do receive a call from a Trinet Transportation rep you’ll notice that they’re trying to build a relationship…you’ll also notice that they actually know about the industry and care about your needs.  They aren’t cold callers…they’re Business Solution Providers.

Give us a call…we’d be happy to discuss your needs and the solutions we can provide to make shipping…EASIER.
